Veedios
Veedios is a scalable video information aggregation and extraction platform. It stores and provides an API for accessing detailed information about online videos such as their title, description, related thumbnails, video endpoint, duration, etc.
Input
Veedios is capable of consuming standard RSS, MRSS and/or ATOM feeds at any given interval.Extraction
When processing feeds Veedios extracts, aggregates, analyzes and indexes key details about the video content contained within each feed. The videos themselves are not harvested.Output
Veedios provides an API for accessing video information. Videos can be retrieved in variety of ways (e.g.) by hierarchical structure such as category/subcategory, by popular tags, searching, etc. API responses are returned via JSON. Result size is customizable and pagination details are included in the responses. How it works
- We start by creating an application as a container for your content
- One or many feeds are associated with your application
- A feed read rate is set for your application (e.g.) once every 24 hours. If using multiple feeds you can choose to override the master read rate for individual feeds that require more frequent scans.
- Lastly, make use of the API to create custom clients
Pricing
Please contact us for pricing.Note: Veedios is not directly tied to Boxee. Boxee applications just happen to be the first set of the clients we've put together to demonstrate the platforms capabilities. For information on non-Boxee clients please contact us.
Samples and Use Cases
So how might one make use of the platform you ask? We've developed two clients to help demonstrate the usefulness and robustness of the platform. For these sample clients we decided to target the television and make use of Boxee. Boxee provides us with a framework for delivering applications to the television and Veedios provides the backend for identifying and locating videos we plan to display within our applications.1) FOX News Network:
The goal of this project was to take an existing website with a vast (and continuously growing) amount of well organized video content and help bring it to the television. FOX News has such a site at http://videos.foxnews.com. Before getting into the implementation details lets start off with a video of the end result.
Implementation Details:
- Identify all the feeds used on the site
- Categorize feeds within Veedios so that they mirror the structure on the existing site
- Set a master feed refresh rate and override specific feeds like "Latest News" to scan more frequently
- As new feed entries arrive they are processed and archived so that we can support searching and browsing by popular tags within the application
- Construct the application UI using our standard Boxee UI template and integrate it with the Veedios API using our custom Veedios Python library
End Result:
- Users now have access to the same content available on the website, but in a manner much better suited for viewing on the television.
- Videos are presented in the original video player and all ads play just as though the user was viewing the content in a standard web browser.
- Potential revenue has been expanded since the content in now available in a new medium. Viewing of video content and thus ads will increase and consumers are likely to watch more content since they can do so from the comfort of their own couch using just a remote control to navigate the vast amount of content available.
- Cost to expand into this new medium was minimal. No new content was required. The existing content was simply repackaged for a better large screen viewing experience.
2) Yahoo! YUI Theater:
The goal of this project was to take a website with an existing set valuable video content and help bring it to the television. Ideally the video content should be longer than average online videos such that users would prefer to view them from the comfort of their couch rather than glued to a small computer screen. We selected Yahoo!'s YUI Theater for this project since it contains a wealth of great developer related videos featuring well known industry experts. The videos are typically over 30 minutes in length and some are upwards of 90 minutes. Before getting into the implementation details lets start off with a video of the end result.
Implementation Details:
- Identify feed used on the site
- Set feed refresh rate
- Process and archive new feed entries as they are added
- Construct the application UI using our standard Boxee UI template and integrate it with the Veedios API using our custom Veedios Python library

- Viewing of video content will increase and consumers are likely to watch more content since they can do so from the comfort of their own couch using just a remote control to navigate the vast amount of content available.
- There is no revenue impact to consider for this particular project since Yahoo! provides YUI Theater to the community as a free service.
- Cost to expand into this new medium was minimal. No new content was required. The existing content was simply repackaged for a better large screen viewing experience.
